Photographer and visual artist Dimitry Gomberg’s On the Road Home is a relentless and deeply personal
documentation of his family's travels - spanning multiple continents and told from a singular point of
view that assembles fragments of lived experience into a self-contained “country” of images, an archive
of nomadic life. This constructed territory only tangentially touches the world it depicts, operating
instead as a mythology of place, repetition, and displacement.
The Garage Gallery, a restored wood-framed garage with a muted theatrical setting, allows for the
combination of photography and found objects assemblage, carrying specific significance for the artist.
The gallery, with its immersive atmosphere, draws the visitor into a journey in search of a mythic home.
Behind the work is a larger geopolitical landscape stretching into the past - the artist’s personal
experiences in the former Soviet Union, and in the present, with current political and economic
instability, that forces the artist’s generation to rethink the mythologies handed over to them. In artists
own words: “The world is shifting once again, and millions of people are rethinking what 'home' means.
Our instability has also become an ability the ability to create a feeling of home wherever we are.”
